Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module is designed to meet the needs of established dental surgeons who wish to enhance their understanding and clinical skills in Orthodontics and offer their patients an extended range of treatment options. This postgraduate programme has been developed to equip students with specific expertise in the field of Orthodontics together with advanced clinical training. It also aims to enhance professional development by training dentists to think creatively and independently, to solve problems, to exercise judgement and to communicate clearly and effectively with patients; promote an awareness of modern Orthodontics and its scope for use in general dental practice; provide hands-on experience in Orthodontic Case Assessment, Diagnosis, Treatment Planning and Treatment; facilitate small group interactive learning in a structured manner; encourage critical reading and assessment of research papers and publications.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module, you should be able to demonstrate: A theoretical knowledge of the principles of orthodontic dentistry The ability to apply anatomical principles to the field of orthodontics The ability to apply physiological principles to the field of orthodontics The ability to analyse and interpret scientific papers in a critical way The acquisition of practical orthodontic skills The ability to use orthodontic systems The ability to undertake case assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning The ability to satisfy medico-legal requirements The ability to apply functional anatomy in orthodontic tooth movements The ability in written communication skills The ability in oral communication skills The ability to use information technology Manual dexterity
