Principal aims

Gain a critical understanding of the complex interrelationships between evidence and values which underpin the practice and development of clinical education.

Principal learning outcomes

Formulate research questions and construct systematic searches for evidence relevant to clinical education; Demonstrate the advanced information skills required to undertake complex literature searches and manage the results; Use the principles and techniques of critical appraisal to evaluate evidence produced within a range of research paradigms and traditions; Demonstrate a critical understanding of the relationships between ‘research’, ‘theory’ and ‘practice’ in relation to clinical education; Identify the benefits and limitations of approaches to reviewing literature in a range of fields relating to clinical education; Apply critical understanding of appropriate methods for the investigation of particular research questions to the appraisal of research proposals and published studies; Demonstrate a critical understanding of the relationship between ‘evidence’, ‘values’ and ‘professionalism’ in the practice and development of clinical education; Identify ethical issues in educational research and critically evaluate approaches to the resolution of complex ethical issues; Articulate a personal conception of professionalism in clinical education, demonstrating an original synthesis of ideas relating to scholarship, critical reflection, evidence-based practice and values-based practice.

Before taking this module, you should have successfully completed the requirements of the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education (which represents achievement of the HEA’s national professional standards for higher education). You must either have already completed the following modules: 'Essentials of Clinical Education'; 'Assessment in Clinical Education'; and 'Becoming an Effective Teacher'. Or, completed an M level postgraduate certificate in education (relevant to clinical education) at another institution and/or achieved Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
