Module content and teaching

Principal aims

Students will be provided with the knowledge and skills to be more effective in managing financial resources and improving productivity of the systems in which they work.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students will be able to: Explain how and why financial planning and control is exercised and financial accountability is ensured in healthcare contexts Explain how to prepare and interpret budget statements and critically evaluate alternative approaches to budget setting Discuss, compare and contrast various approaches to costing of NHS services and critically evaluate their implications for decision making, contracting and performance management Critically evaluate the processes for funding the constituent parts of the NHS and compare and contrast with alternatives Critically evaluate capital funding processes in health systems Critically evaluate financial incentive and payment mechanisms aimed at improving productivity in health systems
