Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module is available to students who are taking most of the MAs in the department. It is necessarily interdisciplinary and it should provide an opportunity for students to link the more theoretical material in other modules with the empirical experiences of development by particular states in East Asia. The aim of the module is to introduce students to the general issues of development in the region and to deepen their ability to analyse them with a postgraduate level of sophistication.

Principal learning outcomes

(1) to develop students’ ability independently to analyse the development strategies of individual countries, to compare them and to draw out generalisations which could have significance for other states; (2) to enable students to link theoretical and empirical analysis of political and economic material; (3) to develop research skills, particularly strategies for searching for material, including on the Internet; (4) to develop students’ ability to make Powerpoint presentations.

Timetabled teaching activities
