Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module is a core component of the MA Politics research training programme. It offers an introduction to data analysis and interpretation. It has two aims: Its primary purpose is to provide students with the skills needed to understand, interpret, and critically assess statistics and other empirical data presented by the news media and in academic journals. A second purpose of this course is to provide students with a solid foundation to conduct own empirical analyses and to familiarise them with the complexities inherent in analysing large datasets such as the British Election Studies and the World Values Surveys. The course also aims at assisting students in sharpening their critical thinking skills and provides opportunities to train causal interpretation. In doing so, it aims to provide students with important skills, which are of both academic and vocational value, being an essential part of the intellectual training of a political scientist and also useful for a career.

Principal learning outcomes

In particular by the end of the module students should: have an increased interest in rigorous political analysis; be able to select the appropriate research techniques and to properly design research studies; be able to use statistical software to analyse real data in order to test a hypothesis of interest; be able to follow quantitative research in leading political science journals; be able to analyse quantitative data with R and interpret the results correctly; get to learn independently more complicated statistical procedures; be able to conduct sound quantitative research and testing theoretical propositions in a rigorous manner; have acquired valuable tools applicable in many workplace settings.
