Principal aims

The principal aims of Democratisation and Development are to: critically examine and illuminate the relationships between development and democratic change; introduce the conceptual debates about the key terms, compare alternative theoretical models, and consider the empirical evidencedemonstrate the importance of political parameters as influences on the nature and pace of economic and socio-economic change; show how developmental factors can significantly influence democratisation and why these factors must be taken into account when assessing the prospects for democracy; draw specific attention to the influence of the international environment, meaning both ideas and institutions concerning the various trajectories taken by development and democratic change (forwards or backwards) in developing countries and new democracies.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module you will have an appreciation of the complexity of the relationship between democratisation and development. You will know how to appraise the prospects for democratisation in a variety of development situations. More specific learning outcomes are developed practical skills in the retrieval and presentation of information, demonstrated in class presentations and essays; developed skills in oral communication, demonstrated in class discussions and presentations; developed skills in written communication, demonstrated in assessed essays; participatory skills, exhibited in group work; enhanced powers of critical analysis, tested by the assessment methods for this module.
