Module content and teaching

Principal aims

To discuss the main approaches to qualitative research used in politics and international studies; To consider the principal methodological problems involved in conducting a piece of research in PAIS; To prepare students for further research training and doctoral work in PAIS.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module students should be able to: identify and assess the principal qualitative methods used in Politics and International Relations research; evaluate which methods will prove most useful in their own research; have a sophisticated appreciation of potential ethical issues entailed in qualitative research together with ideas on how to respond to such issues in their own research; evaluate questions of scientific validity and reliability as they relate to qualitative research; show good investigative and information retrieval skills.
