Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The aim of this module is to provide students with a critical introduction to debates concerning a range of perceived ‘new’ security challenges which are increasingly important for shaping global agendas in the 21st century. Although operating as a stand alone module it also complements the MA module on Concepts and Theories of International Security by interrogating how security is conceived and in whose interest security operates in debates about the new security agenda.

Principal learning outcomes

The objective of the module is to promote critical analysis of claims made concerning the broadly defined area of new security challenges. This type of analysis is promoted through encouraging students to evaluate whether this agenda is in fact ‘new’, and through encouraging reflection on the extent to which old patterns of conceiving security remain entrenched or are being replaced by more emancipatory agendas. Students will learn to comprehend and work with the technical concepts and language of security studies, as well as to critically interrogate those concepts and the claims frequently made about security threats. This learning will be displayed through analytical essay writing and the presentation of arguments in seminar discussions. By the end of the module, students should have acquired a sound knowledge of key debates concerning the new security agenda.
