Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module covers the mathematical description and analysis of complex systems with stochastic time evolution.

Principal learning outcomes

"(a) Subject knowledge and understanding Students should have an advanced-level understanding of Markov chains. They should be able to work with examples in discrete spaces in an independent and practical manner. They should have an appreciation of the generalisation to continuous spaces and coarse grained descriptions using scaling limits. They should be current with Stochastic Particle Systems and the concept of Symmetries and Universality Classes. (b) Key Skills: Teamwork Mathematical modelling (c) Cognitive Skills: Building a quantitative model from a phenomenological description Critical reading and understanding of research papers related to the subject (d) Subject Specific/Professional Skills; They should be able to build and run stochastic simulation models, and analyse their behaviour numerically."

Timetabled teaching activities

2x 1hr lectures per week, 2 x 1hr classwork sessions.
