Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module will address the development of theatre spaces, selecting examples from the Ancient Greeks to the present. Lectures will provide an overview of principal developments. Issues of theatre historiography will be raised. Seminars will discuss different types of space across historical periods and in relation to current and future developments: arenas, amphitheatres, courtyards, the Restoration theatres in England, London and regional theatres (including the repertory movement), main houses and studio theatre spaces, festival theatres, opera and dance venues, and the conversion of unconventional (‘found’) spaces into performance venues on a temporary or permanent basis.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module students will demonstrate an understanding of Theatre Historiography and will be able to place current theatre construction in the context of historical developments. They will be skilled in evaluating different types of performance spaces, analysing their effectiveness for the performance of different repertoires and investigating the relationship between performance spaces and the wider environment of the buildings in which they are constructed enabling them to raise important topics in relation to the future development of performance spaces.
