Module content and teaching
Principal aims
The module aims to give participants an understanding of the basic techniques used in transportation. All major techniques in the fields of road-traffic, air-traffic, railroad and navy are discussed. Transport chains using freight-villages, intermodal transports, combined transport etc. are described as well. The basics in design and running of transport-chains as location planning, design and organisation of dispatch departments, supply-chain-management, tour-planning, tracking-and-tracing etc. are described and exercised by the students in case-studies.
Principal learning outcomes
On completion successful participants should be able to: Have a basic knowledge about the increasing volume of traffic in Europe and the impact of this development to a company’s distribution system; Decide which transportation techniques are required to fulfil the requirement of a present transportation task; Perform a tour-planning for a number of trucks delivering goods to a various number of destinations; Work out a simple warehouse location problem in subject to the location of clients, own factories and the flow of goods; Know the basics of track and trace-systems, and the design of dispatch areas in subjects of requirements from transportation systems.
