Module content and teaching
Principal aims
This module complements the set of theory modules, CH160, CH161 and CH162, enabling students to solve problems practically in the main branches of chemistry. The laboratory component is intended to develop students’ practical skills and their facility for processing their own data, both with the aim of achieving a professional standard.
Principal learning outcomes
By the end of the module the student should: Have a good understanding of basic practical techniques inorganic, organic and physical chemistry Be able to use a range of chemical software, including basic molecular modelling codes, plus access relevant databases to support their practical chemistry; Have an understanding of basic research methodology and be able to solve a problem using practical methods Understand how the theory of chemistry is developed from its practice.
Timetabled teaching activities
Laboratory Sessions & Self Study (inc. Pre-lab and Comp Workshops): 24 CATS- 5hrs Orientation, 100 hrs lab (20 days x 5hrs), 135 hrs self study 36 CATS - 5hrs Orientation, 135 hrs lab (27 days x 5 hrs), 220 hrs self study
