Module content and teaching
Gaining Laboratory Experience in an overseas academic laboratory setting in a European (or other) University or Research centre is an excellent way for a trainee chemist to further their practical skills and gain valuable information enabling them to make informed career choices. Students undertaking this module are expected to carry out a significant piece of research work or project which is written up as a report. Although the exact nature of the work is not important the report should demonstrate an ability to write up the work in a style which clearly communicates the aims and outcomes of the project. Where possible the data should be presented in a format which would allow another chemist to validate the work carried out. The module thus contributes in a large part to the development of planning and communication skills through experiential learning and as such can be considered extremely important in the development of a practising scientist’s skill set.
Principal learning outcomes
By the end of the module the student should be able to: Plan a written report on a substantial project; Carry out a piece of closely supervised work of a chemical nature; Think about role in placement setting; Analyse development as a Professional Chemist as a result of placement.
Timetabled teaching activities
300 hrs Laboratory based work. Pre-placement seminar(s) and guidance from module coordinator, plus self study time. Possible, on-site visit from personal tutor or module coordinator. Day-to-day supervision from placement supervisor.

Pre-requisites: CH222 and CH2A5. This module is available to BSc Chemistry and Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry students.
