Module content and teaching

Principal aims

To give a rigorous underpinning to the topics and techniques met in EC120 Quantitative Techniques and EC123 Mathematical Techniques B. To introduce some of the more advanced mathematics used by mathematical economists. To develop a more detailed understanding of set theory and the calculus of functions of real variables; To justify the need for abstraction, and to develop a facility for constructing and following precise mathematical arguments.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of this module you should have acquired a deeper understanding of the mathematics introduced in other modules such as EC123 Mathematical Techniques B and obtained a sound foundation for later specialisation in the mathematical and statistical aspects of economics. You will also have enhanced your capability to think clearly and rigorously, as required in your study of economic theory.
