Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The course aims to provide students with important skills which are of both academic and vocational value, being an essential part of the intellectual training of an economist and social scientist and also useful for a career. In particular the course aims to equip students with competencies in the following: 1. An awareness of the empirical approach to economics and social science; 2. Review and extend fundamental statistical concepts, including principal component analysis; 3. Methods of data collection and analysis; 4. Regression analysis, its extensions and applications; 5. Use of spreadsheets and statistical packages such as SPSS (Or STATA).

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module students will have acquired the necessary skills and knowledge to be able to critically appraise work in the area of applied economics and social science. They will have a good intuitive grasp of the dangers, pitfalls and problems encountered in doing applied modelling. They will also gain a familiarity with the use of statistical packages such as SPSS (or STATA).

Timetabled teaching activities

3 hours of lectures, plus 1 hour of seminars, per week for 20 weeks. (seminars include 6 laboratory sessions during the year.)
