Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The module is concerned with two main topics: limited dependent variable models and panel data analysis. Prior to this some time will be spent on the required statistical background, including a review of OLS estimation and an introduction to Maximum Likelihood estimation. Matrix methods are used to simplify model representation and analysis but only introduced as and when required. The module will be a combination of theoretical derivation of techniques and practical empirical implementation of the techniques.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module the student should be able to carry out empirical analyses using different types of economics data (panel, limited dependent variable); Interpret the results of such analyses; Demonstrate an ability to critically assess empirical papers.

Timetabled teaching activities

20 hours of lectures plus 4 hours of seminars over one term.
