Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The module focuses on the development of a Freudian scenography, tracing the process by which Freud struggles to conceptualise the power of unconscious scenes in relation to trauma, memory, fantasy, dream and their determining force in both psychic life and cultural production. This entails the study of some fundamental concepts of classical metapsychology and their implementation in both clinical case studies and the interpretation of works of art. In particular, the module studies the role played by Freud's reading of Sophocles, Shakespeare and Hoffman at the turning points in reformulation of his theory. This equips students to analyse the role of fantasy and sub text in literary works thus enhancing reading and analytic skills.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students will have gained knowledge and understanding of some of the main metaphysical texts and issues in the psychoanalytic tradition, as well as of the genre of the clinical case study.

Timetabled teaching activities

One seminar per week, however for weeks which deal with theoretical material there will be a lecture.
