Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The module presents different modes of American writing (fiction, poetry, social analysis, graphic narrative, video and digital/online media) and focuses on a variety of themes: the individual in a mediatized and information-saturated global market; eco-catastrophe; the perception and experience of terror; the return to more overt forms of military imperialism; the family as focal point for registering global change, and as site for social reproduction of class struggle; and the culture of personal trauma, nostalgia, and collective historical memory. Authors/artists covered may include: Cormac McCarthy, Dave Eggers, Retort, Jonathan Franzen, Deborah Eisenberg, George Saunders, Dexter Filkins, Kathryn Bigelow, Brett Easton Ellis, Susan Willis, Slavoj Zizek, Joshua Clover and Jennifer Moxley.

Timetabled teaching activities

Weekly seminars. Student discussion, in both small and large groups, is the core of the module.
