Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The module aims to: Consider aspects of science, technology (including ICT) and the environment, appropriate to the early years of childhood; Examine content areas of life and living processes; materials and their properties and physical processes; and technology in relation to exploration of young children’s knowledge and understanding of the world; Examine development of young children scientific and technological skills through practice (including using tools, building and construction techniques, measurement instruments, recording in tables and displaying on graphs). Examine scientific processes that provide a means of testing children’s ideas by scientific methods (observing, predicting, hypothesizing, interpreting and inferring); Understand the informal ideas, concepts and misconceptions that children already have; Recognise the role of the adult in recognising and developing children’s ideas; Develop skill in recognising and matching activities that challenge children’s misconceptions and extend their ideas; Evaluate dynamic forces at work in shaping early years science teaching; Critically evaluate the role of new technologies in the development of young children’s environmental awareness, scientific and technological understanding and skills.
