Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The aim of this module is to stimulate the aesthetic interest and appreciation of engineering students. By providing an education in the artistic language of vision, the future engineers will be better able to incorporate aesthetic value into their design work. It will also open students up to aesthetic feeling that is an essential component of the creative process.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module the student should be able to: Show an enhanced ability to think visually, and communicate ideas in visual ways; Appreciate the importance of design in both aesthetic and functional terms; Understand major developments in art and design as they have occurred; Recognise the importance of human factors in design; Demonstrate improved skills of research and information gathering; Demonstrate presentation skills; Exercise time management skills.

Timetabled teaching activities

All terms. This module consists of 12 lectures, 10 two-hour seminars and a site visit.Required self-study: 260 hours.
