Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module looks at the broad range of topics which contribute to quality systems including: People (motivation, management, importance to quality); Leadership (what it is, why it matters, how to exhibit it); Models (how they help, alternative models & how they work); Strategy (treating quality as a strategic initiative, linking quality to business goals); Processes (how to define, manage and improve them); Customer focus (why it matters, how customers perceive quality, how to measure customer satisfaction & use it to drive improvement); Continuous improvement (how to organize for it, how to start it and how to keep it going); Organisational Learning (what it is, how to measure it, how to make it happen).

Principal learning outcomes

"By the end of the module the student should be able to: Understand the relevant quality philosophies their strengths and limitations; Appreciate the implications on design and manufacture with the introduction of quality systems; Appreciate the total cost of the introduction of a quality system not just the component cost; Appreciate the human and legal implications of quality systems; Specify a new quality system with regard to a specific company, culture and product. "
