Module content and teaching

Principal aims

Automobiles are made up of primary systems that individually behave as dynamic systems. The aims of this module are: to introduce techniques and computer tools for modelling, predicting, analysing and understanding the behaviour of the individual primary systems in automobiles, and the interactions between these primary systems; and to promote understanding of the role of on-board control systems in automobiles.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module the student should be able to: Understand and model the dynamic behaviour of the primary subsystems which govern the operation of automobiles; Understand and model the growing interactions between the primary subsystems which govern the operation of automobiles; Understand the importance of on-board control systems in automobiles, including the environmental and social motives for the their increasing use; Recognize the future direction of automobile systems and control technology; Appreciate the role and use of systems modelling in automobile engineering; Appreciate the role and use of control techniques in automobile engineering.
