Module content and teaching

Principal aims

Civil Engineers and those with an interest in appropriate technology require some exposure to Public Health engineering. This module provides the only final year treatment of this degree theme. 'Water' is chosen for its high engineering content and because other development technologies were briefly addressed in earlier modules.This module covers the economically significant applications of hydraulic engineering to agriculture (Irrigation)- a field of particular employment opportunity for AT and other Graduates.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module the student should be able to: identify common water supply and sanitation technologies and the biological and physical processes underlying them; illustrate the combination of economics, engineering and social organisation that determines the best choice between competing technologies for any specific site; design simple irrigation systems and choose between competing methods of water extraction; appreciate the complexity of the socio-technical interactions that constrain the construction of new irrigation or hydropower schemes.
