Module content and teaching

Principal aims

To provide the students with a grounding in the methods and techniques used in the construction and management of building and civil engineering works. To prepare students for working in the construction industry and related project management environments and to be able to understand and articulate their personal role and responsibility as a professional engineer. To provide the students with an understanding of various ground improvement and construction processes and the important interaction between construction processes, methods, temporary works and permanent works which must be appreciated by the whole project team in order to achieve a safe, economic outcome over the project life cycle.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module the student should be able to: Understand the role of temporary works in the safe, economic provision of construction works; Appreciate the range of processes and methods involved in design and construction of civil engineering works; Produce safe, economic temporary works and permanent works design; Develop and apply business understanding to the construction industry; Identify and interpret forms of contract and documents associated with a typical construction project; Identify and use appropriate techniques to schedule, control and manage a construction project; Understand the management roles and processes in order to implement the design economically and safely.
