Module content and teaching
Principal aims
Geotechnical Engineering is a core topic for all degrees in Civil Engineering. This module deals with a number of topics of significance to the industry. Modern concern for the environment has led to a growing awareness of the need for an informed treatment of problems of the development of difficult, derelict and contaminated land, and the disposal of waste in landfill and other sites. Equally important is an awareness of natural and man-made hazards. The use of underground space is of growing national and international importance as evidenced by major projects such as Crossrail. An understanding of how structures and instrumentation are affected by disturbance of the ground will aid the selection and application of data to design.
Principal learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this module students should be able to: Appreciate the relevance and importance of geotechnical engineering in identifying, investigating and dealing with natural and manmade hazards; Outline design methods for the investigation, identification, treatment and containment of waste and the types of problems which may arise in the development of difficult, derelict and contaminated land in the context of the ground model created and current guidelines; Select appropriate tunnelling methods and support systems for tunnels in soil and rock; Understand the nature of complex soils and the limitations on prediction resulting from disturbance caused by sampling, insitu measurements and deep foundations.
