Module content and teaching
This module provides students with the opportunity to study abroad for a year at a host University approved by the department. They will experience and gain a deeper understanding of the social and cultural environment of the host location and country. Those students who choose to study and live in a second language environment will develop their existing language skills and all participants on the module will enhance the essential intercultural communication skills necessary for living, working and studying outside their home country. Overall, living and travelling abroad for a year can be expected to be a memorable and life-enhancing experience which provides the students with opportunities for personal development in preparation for employment and global citizenship.
Principal learning outcomes
There will clearly be a variety of learning outcomes that will accrue from the Year Abroad, some tangible, others less specifically identifiable. Students can expect to return with an enhanced knowledge and understanding of their subject specialism(s). They will develop the qualities and transferable skills necessary for working or studying in another country and in a different academic system. Where the sojourn takes place in a second language environment, students will acquire developed oral and written language skills and an understanding of the relationship between the language and culture of the host country. All Participants in the module will acquire developed transferable skills in sensitivity to diversity in terms of culture and inter-cultural competencies.
