Module content and teaching
The aims of this module are as follows: firstly to familiarise students with canonical theories conerning the interpretation and reception of moving image media; secondly the reinforcement fo the skills of textual analysis that students gain across the first year, though the provision of intensive practice in looking and listening closely to film; thirdly, the module aims to give practice in using the conceptual language of film and telelvision criticism and theory confidently and with precision both orally, and in writing; fourthly, students wll be encouraged to reflect on the logical organisation of points of argument and their effective presentation as well as considering the validity of the theoretical arguments they encounter. this will help them to structure their own work logically and to begin to develop skills in the structuring and presentation of coherent, consistent, effective arguments. The conceptual appreciation of films and television programmes provided by this module is an essential part of the foundation of learning and development on the undergraduate degrees in Film and Television and Film Studies.
Principal learning outcomes
Accurately identify and describe key elements of the film text with specific attention to the ways in which the details contribute to conceptual understandings of the specific film under analysis. Demonstrate subject specific knowledge, understanding and skills, key skills, cognitive skills. Provide accurate accounts of theoretical models and clear, useful definitions of the conceptual language that they generate. The evaluation of different theories and the effective presentation of your own arguments in clear, coherent and logical forms.
