Module content and teaching
Principal aims
To provide an appreciation of the multiplicity of different postmodernisms. To provide the means for students to engage directly with key primary texts by major philosophers and cultural theorists of the postmodern. To provide an opportunity to critically evaluate different theoretical frameworks and models. To assess the ways in which concepts of the postmodern are useful for analysing films through the detailed analysis of key film texts.
Principal learning outcomes
Outline and critically evaluate the work of at least one of the key theorists of the postmodern. Apply their chosen theories to a range of film texts, offering detailed textual analysis of at least one film from the module. To relate the development of postmodern Hollywood to the historical development of Hollywood cinema - specifically discourses on 'New Hollywood'. Improve skills inthe construction of argument, writing and presentation of evidence in an oral or written piece. Further improve and refine skills in textual analysis. Use library resources and other data sources to engage independent research.
