Module content and teaching

Principal aims

To provide students with a firm grounding in French Grammar, building on what has been learned at ‘A’ level, identifying gaps in knowledge and areas of weakness, and introducing new complexities appropriate to first-year university studies;To develop students’ ability to produce accurate and varied French within certain defined parameters; To develop students’ ability to read French accurately and to extract pertinent information from French texts;To develop your confidence in speaking French in a class situation.

Principal learning outcomes

To encourage both teacher-led and independent learning through the study of explanations and the use of exercises in the grammar text book Grammaire progressive du français, and through appropriate use of its corrigé; To increase students' understanding and active use of the technical language of grammar, To develop students’ comprehension of written French; To develop students’ ability to identify the problems and pitfalls inherent in the translation of passages of different types and registers; To develop students’ discernment of their written English and their recognition of the need for accuracy in their mother tongue when translating. Students will develop their ability to express opinions about issues of general interest in response to a variety of French texts, both orally and in written form. Students will develop ‘extensive’ reading and comprehension skills, by learning how to ‘skim’ and ‘scan’ a French text. Students will develop their ability to exploit French texts for vocabulary, idioms, organisational strategies, grammatical structures. Students will develop greater awareness of different possibilities for structuring written arguments and discussions in French. Students will develop their ability to construct complex sentences and will build upon the grammatical knowledge acquired in the Grammar and Translation element of this module by applying topics discussed in this module in their written French. To develop your accuracy in spoken French; to enable you to read with correct pronunciation and intonation from a passage in French; to enable you to discuss the content of a passage of written French in grammatically correct French of an appropriately formal register; to develop your comprehension of recorded material in French, spoken at the speed of a native speaker; to encourage you to use available resources (TV, radio) to develop their aural and oral skills.
