Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module examines the theme of madness in nineteenth-century French writing and focuses in particular on representations of women in mental distress in fictional, clinical, and autobiographical works

Principal learning outcomes

The module will build on linguistic and interpretative work carried out in the first year of study. The module will extend the knowledge of candidates and their ability to deal critically with literary texts and with literary critical concepts. It aims to develop the conceptual awareness and analytical abilities of candidates and enhance their capacity for effective information-gathering and research, together with their linguistic and presentational skills, both oral and written.

Timetabled teaching activities

One lecture and one seminar per week.
