Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module allows you to study very recent work by some of the most talked-about and culturally significant of contemporary French writers. The module will give you the opportunity to develop an interest in writing you may have encountered or heard discussed while on your Year Abroad in France.

Principal learning outcomes

We look at the impact of developments in the way in which writing is produced and consumed; we discuss selected examples of new writing and reading technologies, including the creative writing workshop and writing for the internet; we look at how genres such as the literary-philosophical essay, the memoir and the novel have adapted to their new social contexts. We ask in what senses literary writing can be thought of as political. We ask what it means to understand this writing as 'French' in the contemporary context: we study texts by a range of authors who problematize their own relationship to France and Frenchness and use these to discuss what it means to be a French writer in the Twenty-First Century, in the midst of a globalized and overwhelmingly Anglophone world.

Timetabled teaching activities
