Module content and teaching

Principal aims

To cultivate skills of literary analysis;To increase awareness and understanding of Wilhelmine Germany, its history, politics and culture;To further understanding of the relationship between literature and society, in particular the location of cultural products within a social and political context.

Principal learning outcomes

This final year module is open to all finalists taking German and German-related degree courses, and to suitably qualified external students. As a module providing coverage of a key period in modern German history, the first half-century of Germany's existence as a unified state, it is the final year equivalent of Writers Media and Society in Contemporary Germany and Culture and Politics in the Weimar Republic and the Third Reich.

Timetabled teaching activities

As a final year module the emphasis is primarily on student-led seminar work, with occasional lectures providing the historical context. Seminars are a combination of small group student-led discussion focused on a particular aspect of the topic, followed by a broader plenary session.
