Module content and teaching
Principal aims
This module introduces the medium of sculpture. It is designed to give you a sound understanding of the fundamentals of sculptural practice as well as encouraging you to think critically about the types of issues that sculpture raises for the art historian. Themes will include: the significance and handling of different materials; the status of sculpture as a medium; and the role of the viewer. The core of the course will concentrate on one of the great periods of sculptural production, the Italian Renaissance.
Principal learning outcomes
All first-year Short Options are especially geared towards first-hand, close study of works of art and architecture in museums, galleries or on site. They foster skills in visual analysis, and promote students’ ability to analyse artworks independently, thus providing them with skills necessary for their more advanced work.
Timetabled teaching activities
1 x 1œ-hour seminar per week
