Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The aim of this module is to introduce students to key terms in art of the twentieth century. One of the fundamental assumptions of this module is that the key terms for analysing contemporary art come from ruptures and innovations earlier in C20th. The module is geared towards close study of works of art and key texts, wherever possible travelling to see examples on site. It aims to foster skills in visual analysis, and to promote your ability to analyse artworks independently, thus providing you with skills necessary for more advanced work

Principal learning outcomes

"All first-year Short Options are especially geared towards first-hand, close study of works of art and architecture in museums, galleries or on site. They foster skills in visual analysis, and promote students’ ability to analyse artworks independently, thus providing them with skills necessary for their more advanced work. "
