Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The module aims are: to provide you with basic probability and statistical concepts that will prove essential in other modules and also serve as a foundation for Quantitative Analysis for Management 2; to introduce you to realistic problems using case material where appropriate and making use of Excel to analyse data sets; to enable you to engage in applying the concepts outlined in lectures and in understanding how the techniques learnt are used in practice.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module you should be able to: demonstrate an understanding of the need for probability and statistical methods, and be aware of the strengths and limitations of these methods; demonstrate familiarity with basic concepts and specific techniques; use scientific calculators to solve a range of statistical problems; use Excel confidently; demonstrate your numerical ability; tackle real life quantitative problems, and convey results and discuss the issues involved; apply basic quantitative tools, with an awareness of their limitations.
