Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module aims to: extend your understanding of probability and statistical concepts building on the base established in QAM1; further develop your competence in the use of a variety of quantitative tools and techniques, both for their own value and for their relevance in later applied and specialised fields; extend your understanding of the application of quantitative tools and techniques to the solution of real-life problems using case study material and of the applicability (especially via tutorials) of the concepts presented in lectures.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module you should be able to: understand the quantitative approach to decision-making, the role of modelling within that approach, and the strengths and limitations of that approach; demonstrate familiarity with basic concepts and specific techniques; communicate numerately; use more advanced Excel functions such as Solver; demonstrate an integrative understanding of the role of quantitative methods and techniques in addressing quantitative problems; apply more advanced quantitative modelling approaches, development of more specialist use of Excel.
