Principal aims

This module aims to develop your understanding of the theories of accounting, the regulatory environment for financial reporting, corporate governance, the structure of group accounts and models of asset valuation; and to develop you ability to prepare, read, critically evaluate and interpret published annual reports in the light of the information requirements of the various stakeholder groups in the business.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module you should be able to: understand the regulatory framework of accounting, conceptual frameworks, models of asset valuation, inflation accounting and the context of accounting standard setting; understand the definition of the reporting entity, the concept of control, levels of aggregation of accounting information and off-balance sheet activities; demonstrate knowledge of the concepts and conventions in the preparation of group accounts; understand accounting policy disclosure, creative accounting and issues relating to corporate governance; evaluate critically and interpret published annual reports and the information requirements of various stakeholders in the business; show awareness of current developments in financial reporting theory and practices; demonstrate written communication, team work and oral communication, analytical, and problem solving skills; assess the nature of accounting information and describe the relationships between different types of financial statements and accounting numbers; understand the theoretical basis of accounting and the effect this has upon accounting practices; recognise the political context of accounting regulation and accounting standard setting; use technical skills related to the preparation and interpretation of published group accounts; evaluate techniques of financial statement analysis with reference to the information needs of business stakeholders.
