Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The module highlights the interconnectedness between technology, business processes and social aspects of its use in organizations. It characterizes different types of technologies such as transactional systems and systems that support communication and collaboration and the recent growth of social media inside organisations. It also reviews the strategic nature of technology in building and leveraging core competencies and providing competitive advantage. The module also discusses the changing nature of organisations and suggests methods to deal with the challenges in managing and mitigate risks through appropriate security practices and policies.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of this module you should be able to: understand the role and strategic nature of technology in organisations; appreciate the importance of the managerial and organisational issues associated with the adoption and use of IT in organisations; categorise different types of systems and explain their purpose in supporting different functions in organisations; understand the strategic nature of technology in business and be able to provide example of how information can be used strategically to gain competitive advantage; develop an information systems strategy and recommend management policies and measures to enable an organisation to exploit information technologies effectively; be aware of the changing nature of organisations with the rise of social media inside organisations and the additional challenges and risks for business; assess business risks in using technology as a business tool and suggest measures to mitigate risks and improve the security of information in organisations; suggest ways to manage and resource the IS function; critically analyse case studies, as well as academic papers and news in the media on the topic of impact of technology in business.
