Module content and teaching

Principal aims

T Enterprise Architecture is one of the most critical areas of applied IT in business today. Its key role is to design, maintain and govern a plan that provides coherence, coordination, cost control and agility to the complex portfolio of infrastructure and disparate legacy systems of large organisations. This portfolio includes inter-organisational systems, new web-based external facing interfaces, and at a more strategic level, mergers and acquisitions. The module has an applied orientation, linking theoretical ideas with practical experience, and is supported by one or more practitioner sessions.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module you should be able to: explain the role of IT Enterprise Architecture, its key tasks, skills, processes and management and organisational issues; recognise the need to align business interests and proposals with the corporate architecture, and be familiar with the alternative operating models to match the business structure; recognise and reason with the IT architectural domains and other dimensions that inform the outlook of the IT Enterprise Architect and bring some order to their task; articulate and reason with principles of good practice and maturity in managing IT Enterprise Architecture in large UK and multinational organisations; relate theory and pure models of architecture to practical and messy situations; critically appraise IT Enterprise Architectures as portrayed in case studies or as candidate architectures for a proposed system; identify and critique key literature, authors and professionals in the field of IT architecture; devise and communicate arguments based on complex considerations, including presentation, written and verbal; collaborate in group work; show an appreciation of the particular roles and skills of the IT Enterprise Architect.
