Principal aims

You will gain a working knowledge and appreciation of the role of IT Solution Architecture, its key tasks, skills, processes and management and organisational issues, and some experience in applying IT Solution Architecture thinking to realistic situations.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module you should be able to: explain the role of IT Solution Architecture, its key tasks, skills, processes and management issues; demonstrate an understanding of the principles and methods of IT architecture design and evolution; recognise at least one major architectural style in existing IT applications; understand a number of key principles and heuristics of IT architecting; relate theory and pure models of architecture to practical situations; critically appraise IT Solution Architectures as portrayed in case studies or as candidate architectures for a proposed system; identify and critique key literature, authors and professionals in the field of IT architecture; design and justify a well formulated technical architecture for a specified application; use sound principles to generate reasonable architectural alternatives for a problem, identify conflicts and trade-offs and choose among them; devise and communicate arguments based on complex considerations, including presentation, written and verbal; work collaboratively to propose an outline application architecture design; show an appreciation of the particular roles and skills of the IT Enterprise Architect.
