Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module aims to introduce students to some of the principal episodes and thematic strands of Dante’s Comedy as well as to the poem’s ideological, historical, intellectual, and literary dimensions.

Principal learning outcomes

Its particular objectives are for students to: (a) understand the general structure and principal themes of the Inferno and some aspects of its contextual background; (b) show a critical understanding of selected episodes and their relationship to key themes; (c) develop the ability to engage in textual analysis of the Inferno.
