Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The course aims to introduce students to the legal, social and economic factors affecting corporations competing in the global marketplace. The course begins by examining the concept of globalisation and its relationship to international business, and proceeds to focus on the development, operation and regulation of multinational corporations. Issues studied include reasons for the growth of multinationals, their strategy and structure, the economic and legal influences upon them, and the regulatory environments they face.

Principal learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, students should be able to apply and to critique the legal rules relating to global business, including both the structure of national laws and the structure and operation of the WTO. They should also be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of both the legal and economic issues surrounding the establishment and financing of multinational business operations, including the impact of multinational business operations on employees, customers, communities and the environment.

Timetabled teaching activities

The course is comprised of both lectures and seminars in the autumn and spring terms
