Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The module will give the students the chance to spend some time learning and reinforcing the basics of the language. It will offer an opportunity for students not specialising in foreign languages to improve their communicative competence as a supplement to their studies in other spheres. The objectives of the module are to enable the students to develop competence in a range of language tasks performed in familiar work and social contexts, to extend skills in reading and listening comprehension and to consolidate and extend the knowledge and use of grammar and syntax. For those students intending to go on study or work placements, this module can work as a refresher and promote confidence-building for communicating with native speakers abroad.

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students will have: improved their competence in a range of language tasks performed in familiar work and social contexts; extended their skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing; consolidated and extended their knowledge and use of Spanish grammar and syntax; gained familiarity with aspects of contemporary Spanish society and customs. By the end of the course, students should be able to perform at Level A2 Basic user (waystage) of the Common European Framework.

Timetabled teaching activities

One two-hour language class each week, plus at least 3 hours structured independent learning each week. Commencing Term 1, week 2.
