Principal aims

This module provides an introduction to the importance of studying humanities in the professional life of a clinician. We feel that humanities, in this SSM literature in the form of a novel, enhance the ability of a student imaginatively to enter into the lives of others. Middlemarch, the novel is particularly useful in this regard with its many characters that come alive through the prose. The SSM will be structured around the following main themes that are explored in Middlemarch: Issues of Social Inequalities and effect on Health; Lifestyle and Health; Professionalism; Holistic Care; Continuing Education and Research; The Potential for a Medical School locally.

To help develop the presentation skills of students; To enhance a student’s ability to research and prepare an abstract or short paper.
