Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This first-year module specifically for Philosophy and Literature students falls into three parts. The first term is identical with the Philosophy module Descartes & Mill, and consists in an examination of two key areas of Philosophy - Epistemology & Metaphysics and Ethics - as represented in Descartes' Meditations on First Philosophy and Mill's Utilitarianism. In Term 2, the module is taught by a member of the Department of English and investigates key concepts and problems relevant to literary theory, criticism, and philosophical thinking about literature. In Term 3, tutors from both Departments jointly lead the class in study of texts that benefit from combined literary and philosophical study. Authors that have been the focus of this component of the module include Proust, Coetzee, Nietzsche, and Beckett.

Principal learning outcomes

Students should acquire basic knowledge of (1) important figures and debates in the history of philosophy, and (2) central concepts and theories of literature and literary criticism. They should acquire (3) in-depth understanding of an influential literary-philosophical text. Students should also develop their abilities to read, discuss, and write reflectively about philosophical and literary texts, and to combine the approaches and concerns of the two disciplines.

Timetabled teaching activities

The module runs during all three terms, with lectures plus seminar meetings in Terms 1 and 2, and seminar meetings in Term 3.
