Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This module, which is restricted to students on the Mathematics & Philosophy joint degree course, uses a problem-based learning approach to foster the development of reading, presentation and essay writing skills. Students are assigned to small tutorial groups, each of which meets the module tutor for one hour per week to present and discuss the results of self-directed work. Over the course of the term, students typically work on three key topics. They will be given tasks such as finding relevant literature in the library, defining key concepts, identifying patterns of argument, preparing essay plans, giving oral presentations. The selection of topics will be geared specifically to the syllabus of the Mathematics & Philosophy joint degree. Assessment for this module will be based on student essays

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of the module the student should be able to: 1) critically analyse the structure of selected philosophical texts and arguments; 2) present a well organised presentation on a philosophical topic or argument; 3) write a well structured, critical essay on a philosophical topic; 4) become acquainted with basic topics and issues in philosophy of mathematics
