Module content and teaching

Principal aims

"“What does morality require from us?” This is a core question of normative ethics. Further important questions that moral philosophers seek to answer are: “Can moral judgments be true or false, or is it a mistake to think about moral discourse in this way?” “Are there moral facts that exist independently of us or are we the authors of the moral law?” ""Is it rational to be moral?"" These questions are representative of metaethics. The aim of Ethics I is to gain a grasp of key debates in normative ethics and metaethics. We will read classic texts by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Henry Sidgwick, among others, as well as texts by contemporary moral philosophers."

Principal learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students should have a good grasp of the most important topics in metaethics, as well as some topics at the intersection of metaethics and normative ethics.

Timetabled teaching activities
