Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The module aims to: develop an understanding of major ideas related to international security broadly defined; explore some landmark conceptual works related to international security; offer an understanding of the issues surrounding major debates in international security; analyse some key current ethical dilemmas in world politics; assess some contemporary debates about policy. The module aims to: Provide students with an introductory overview of politics at the international level. Introduce students to the concepts, issues and structure of the international political system, along with its complexity and continuing evolution. Locate the theoretical debates on the nature of the international political system within contemporary world politics. Locate contemporary concepts and issues of global politics within the international historical narrative.

Principal learning outcomes

On completion of this module, you should be able to: demonstrate an appreciation of some key debates in international security; critically discuss the characteristics of these major debates; assess the strengths and weaknesses of nine key debates; critically analyse, both orally and in writing, these current issues; achieve a sense of more detailed options awaiting you in years 2 and 3.
