Module content and teaching

Principal aims

The module aims to Provide students with historical, theoretical, and comparative perspectives on post-colonial African politics - where 'Africa' is limited to sub-Saharan Africa. Provide students with an overview of key themes, debates, and issues. Enable students to analyse debates with respect to empirical case studies.

Principal learning outcomes

Critically analyse the nature of post-colonial states, and the relationship between state and society in different countries. Critically analyse the recent history and contemporary politics of particular African countries. Compare political processes and institutions in different African countries. Analyse problems confronting African states including efforts to create stable democracies. Analyse why some states have collapsed into civil war, while others have been relatively successful in terms of economic development and democratisation.

Timetabled teaching activities

The module is taught through a combination of a weekly one-hour lecture and a compulsory one-hour seminar.
