Module content and teaching

Principal aims

This course complements PS113 Statistical Methods in Psychology. The module provides skills and knowledge necessary for understanding the nature of empirical work in psychology, and for designing, implementing, analysing, and reporting the student's own empirical investigations. The module provides valuable preparation for the second and third year projects.

Principal learning outcomes

"At the end of the module students should understand: the principles of psychological research; the properties of different kinds of quantitative and qualitative data; techniques for displaying data; the design and use of SPSS data files; measures of central tendency; measures of variability; elements of probability theory; probability distributions; the principles of experimental, observational and questionnaire methods; the principles of qualitative methods in psychology; ethical issues in psychological research; principles of correlation; sampling distributions and their use in hypothesis testing; principles of parametric and non-parametric hypothesis testing; regression; the use of chi-square tests; the principles and techniques of within- and between-subjects analysis of variance; the design of factorial experiments, and factorial analysis of variance; the use of SPSS for computing the descriptive and inferential statistics mentioned above. "

Timetabled teaching activities

Length of module: 24 weeks. One two-hour laboratory class per week with attendance compulsory. Students will also participate in ten departmental experiments during the year.
